We all know by now that walking is a great way to stay active and healthy. Any amount of walking is beneficial, from walking to the local shop to climbing the stairs at your office or going on a brisk walk. But it seems that walking also sells!
Walk Score, backed by real estate companies wanting to sell their apartments, has identified the most walkable cities in the USA.
In order to do that, the organisation measured the walkability of any address by analysing hundreds of walking routes to nearby amenities. They have awarded them points based on the distances to the amenities. This is how the points were awarded:
- If there were cities where daily errands did not require a car, they’d score 90 points or above.
- If there were cities where most errands could be accomplished on foot, they’d score between 70 to 89 points.
- If there were cities where only some errands could be completed on foot, they’d score between 50 to 69 points.
They have also measured pedestrian friendliness by evaluating population density and road metrics such as block length and number of intersections and crossing.
So what is the most walkable city in the USA?
The top-ranked walkable city is (*drums*) New York City with a score of 88.3! The Big Apple is followed on the podium by San Francisco and Boston which obtained scores of 87.4 and 82, respectively.
The UK also has a ranking based on how walkable your city is and Leeds is one of the cities on the top of the list! Living Streets, a charity which has been promoting walking and pedestrian safety for 90 years, conducted a survey and asked people to rate their walks based on the following elements: feeling safe walking, easy walk to the shops, easy walk to parks, good pavements, and good quality of streets. To find out more about the results of the survey, visit https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/get-involved/the-uks-top-walking-cities#. While you’re there, check out the wider work of Living Streets: at Get Set Leeds we know that walking is one of the easiest and most accessible ways for many people to move more, so let’s get Leeds to the very top of the list in the future.
