It’s free, it can be done just about anywhere and it’s a great way to get active.

Add a bit more walking into your life by meeting a friend for an evening stroll, offering to walk a neighbour’s dog a couple of times a week – or joining a site that lets you borrow a dog. Spot the bluebells or kick through autumn leaves in Roundhay, Temple Newsam, Meanwood, Bramley Falls, Middleton Park or one of Leeds’ other lovely green spaces. Join a walking group through Leeds Let’s Get ActiveLeeds RamblersTCV or Take a Hike. There are also lots of ideas on Walking for Health, which features walking routes alongside regular and drop-in walks for health. Or, join Mental Health Mates, combining walking with peer support for people with mental health difficulties.

Use your phone to record your steps – then take the stairs, park and stride into work, squeeze in a lunchtime stroll, or walk to the local shop. It all adds up…
